Nick Diamond, Business in the Community's Membership Engagement Director, on why 2018 was an exciting year for the Responsible Business agenda and how it demonstrated the power and positive effects that strength in numbers provides
We've seen an astonishing 78 new members join Business in the Community, illustrating the increasing importance of responsible business for 21st century business and the value that joining forces with BITC brings.
New members are joining from a diverse spread of sectors, including established global companies like Facebook, who will have a significant say in the shape of the digital future; from exciting up-and-coming brands like Gymshark, who want to define themselves early on as a responsible business; to infrastructural firms like Drax, who we all depend on as part of the backbone of our economy.
An holistic, collaborative approach around responsible business can create real change. One high profile example of this was the Waste to Wealth Summit. Co-hosted by Veolia, the summit brought together senior leaders from business, government, academia and civil society, to unlock opportunities and make tangible commitments to double the nation's resource productivity and reduce avoidable waste by 2030. Most significantly it included public commitments from a pioneering group of Waste to Wealth Champions who will develop innovation hubs to identify challenges, create roadmaps and develop solutions to the sustainability challenges identified.
The deep engagement on Responsible Business that we've seen from our membership this year paints a compelling future.
We continue to work closely with all our 2018 award winners including Lloyds Banking Group, our Responsible Business of the Year, on what the impact and legacy will be for their tenure of this exciting accolade. We are already looking forward to seeing which other pioneering companies will be winners of the 2019 Awards. Entries are open now!
There is much to look forward to in 2019, with many exciting opportunities to be part of our movement.
