Race for Opportunity Regional Fact Sheets-Ethnic Minorities in England and Wales- A Business Case for Inclusion

The Race for Opportunity Regional Factsheets focus on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities across all the ten regions in England and Wales, and offer calls to action, toolkits, research and guidance to help employers to manage and harness the potential of an increasingly diverse workforce.The 2013 Race for Opportunity Regional Factsheets use the Census 2011 data to create a detailed picture of BAME representation in the ten regions across England and Wales, breaking down data for population, religion, education (primary school through to higher education), and employment and leadership. The Regional Factsheets are useful for employers, local authorities and policy makers to inform long-term planning and collaboration to ensure that they are taking action today against inequality in the workplace in the future.

East of England

9.2% of the East of England's population is BAME. Almost half (45.4%) of all residents in Luton are BAME, and 1 in 5 of Luton’s residents were born in countries outside of the UK and Europe. In 2012, this region had the highest employment rate for BAME people aged 16-64 at 67.7%.
East Midlands

10.7% of the East Midlands population is BAME. At De Montfort University, 38% of the student population are UK-domiciled BAME students. Leicester is home to significant Muslim and Hindu populations - over 61,000 Muslims and more than 50,000 Hindus live in this city.

40.2% of the capital’s population is BAME, making London the most diverse region in the UK. In the London Borough of Newham, BAME children make up a significant 83% of the primary school population. London is the only region where BAME workers hold more than 10% of 'Manager, Directors and Senior Official' positions
North East

4.7% of the North East's population is BAME. Newcastle-upon-Tyne is the most diverse Local Authority - 15% of its residents are BAME. In 2012, the employment rate for BAME people aged 16-64 was 53.3%, compared to 65.9% for the region overall.
North West

9.8% of the North West's population is BAME. In Manchester, a third (33.5%) of the resident population is BAME and over half (50.6%) of all children in Manchester’s primary schools is BAME.
South East

9.3% of the South East's population is BAME, and in Slough, BAME residents make up a significant 54.3% of the population. 1 in 5 (23.3%) of the people in Slough are Muslim and 10.6% are Sikh.
South West

4.6% of the South West's population is BAME, making this one of the two English regions where the BAME population is less than five percent. The highest proportion of BAME people can be found in Bristol, where they make up 16% of the resident population

4.4% of the Welsh population BAME, making it the region with the smallest number of BAME residents. Cardiff is home to the largest proportion of BAME people in Wales, where they make up 15.3% of the city’s population. Children from the 'Mixed/Multiple' ethnic group have the largest representation at schools in this region (2.4% of primary school children and 1.9% of secondary school).
West Midlands

17.3% of the West Midlands population is BAME. In Birmingham, just under half of the resident population is BAME and people of Pakistani origin are by far the largest ethnic minority group representing 13.5% of all people in the city. However, the unemployment rate for BAME people aged 16+ is 14.9%, compared to 8.6% for the region's overall population.
Yorkshire and the Humber

11.2% of Yorkshire and the Humber's population is BAME and nearly a third (32.6%) of the population in Bradford is BAME. In 2012, this region had the highest unemployment rate for BAME people aged 16+ at 17.8%.
